PSR Family Bylaws: Name, Purpose, & Membership (part 3 of 9)

There should be no doubt as to the official name of an organization. If there are other names used to refer to the group (shortened versions that are easier to say in casual conversation, for example), it should be mentioned here that the group is also known as these names.

Clearly defining the group's purpose helps keep the organization focused. It should be stated if the primary purpose be service, social, political, or something else? Is the organization focused on a single issue, a set of issues, a geographic area, or a specific population?

The membership section explains what the members' rights are, what their limitations are, and what, if any, requirements there are for membership. It should also clearly state any required fees, attendance requirements, and any circumstances in which membership can be revoked. If you are going to allow honorary memberships, the particulars about that should be included here as well.

Below is what has been drafted for our Name, Purpose, & Membership.

PSR Bylaws:

Article II. NAME

Section. 01 The name of this organization shall be the Porter-Sanford-Reid Family Reunion (hereinafter referred to as “the Organization”).

Article III. PURPOSE

Section. 01 The purpose of this organization is to unite family members, promote the bond of kinship, encourage the growth and development of family unity, celebrate the legacy and heritage of the Porter-Sanford-Reid Family, and promote the annual reunion.

Section. 02        Honorary Membership/Members in Love. Any personal friend associated or connected with a family member may become an honorary family member by affiliation, working and supporting the reunion endeavors. Honorary members shall not be eligible to hold an office or have voting rights.

We need to be active in reflecting what is important in live. Article II, III, IV are dead on, love it. We are stronger together than apart. I think that honorary members should have the freedom and right to bring their experience and knowledge to the committee to be offered to the body.
