Happy Family History Month

Writer: PSR FamilyPSR Family

Family History Month, officially recognized by Congress in 2001, is celebrated every October as a time to honor and explore our ancestral roots. This month encourages us to engage in activities that promote understanding of our unique histories, fostering a deeper connection to our cultural identities. The initiative highlights the importance of knowing our family background, as it can enhance personal identity and community ties. Various activities, such as storytelling, genealogical research, and sharing family traditions, are encouraged to celebrate our ancestors' legacies.

Family History Month is a time to reflect on the unique and often challenging history of African-American families in the United States, and it serves as a reminder of the resilience, strength, and rich cultural heritage that defines African-American ancestry. For many, exploring this history can be both a rewarding and daunting task, particularly due to the historical barriers that have complicated genealogical research.

The journey of African Americans in tracing our family history is deeply intertwined with the legacy of slavery. Enslaved individuals were often considered property, which meant that traditional records—such as birth certificates, marriage licenses, and land deeds—were rarely created or maintained. This absence of documentation presents significant challenges for those seeking to uncover their roots before the 1870 census (the first census to include names of formerly enslaved individuals).

Many African Americans are committed to uncovering their family histories despite these obstacles. According to a Pew Research study, approximately 76% of Black Americans have spoken with relatives to learn about their family history, utilizing various methods, including oral histories, online databases, and DNA testing. This determination reflects a broader cultural movement towards reclaiming identity and understanding one's place within the larger narrative of American history.

The Porter-Sanford-Reid Family tree currently dates back to 1884. It includes clergy, doctors, educators, first responders, lawyers, military heroes, NFL hall of famers, nurses, politician, White House staff and much more. Are you and your family on the PSR Tree? Can you help break the barrier and trace our history beyond 1884?
